West Hill Business Association

A Coronation Community Association Proposal

"The Coronation Community Association supports the creation of a West Hill Business Association or a Business Improvement Area along Kingston Road East. As local residents and customers, we have a vested interest in doing whatever we can to promote a vibrant business community along Kingston Rd. We stand ready to assist local business leaders in setting up a BA in this area "

A Business Association is an association of business in a specific geographic area, working in cooperation with each other to enhance the appearance of the area, ensure customers have a pleasant and safe visit, stage large events to attract customers and thereby enhance profits for all.

A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is an association of business people within a specified district who join together, with official approval of the City, in a self-help program aimed at stimulating local business.

They use their own money in an ongoing effort to draw more prospective customers to their area by improving the attractiveness of the area and promoting it as a good place to shop, visit and do business.

Once a BIA is approved by City Council, every business within its boundaries automatically becomes a member. There are no exceptions, under the principle that all who benefit should be required to bear their fair share of the cost of the program.

While a BIA arises from the retail and professional activities of a main street, it has a profound effect on the surrounding area. It serves as an economic and social anchor, helping to stabilize and revitalize the local community.

On Friday August 18, 2006 a steering committee composed of representative of City Council, local community groups and business leaders from Kingston Rd met to launch the creation of either a BA or BIA in West Hill. The first step has been taken. Watch here for further updates.

" There are now more than 230 BIAs in place across the province. They vary in size from less than 60 businesses and property owners to more than 2,000. Business Improvement Areas offer a self-help approach to revitalizing business districts. Involvement with a BIA generally entails a substantial commitment of time and financial resources. However, past experience suggests that a committed membership generally leads to a successful BIA."
